STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — After a quarter dominated by Penn State, the Hawkeyes find themselves trailing the fifth-ranked Nittany Lions, 10-0.
The game began with a three-and-out by the Iowa offense, only then for Penn State quarterback Daryll Clark to hit wide receiver Chaz Powell for a 79-yard touchdown on the Nittany Lions’ first play from scrimmage, as Penn State took a 7-0.
It would get uglier for the Hawkeyes. Getting into Penn State territory, Iowa watched a third down pass by quarterback Ricky Stanzi hit wide receiver Colin Sandeman in the chest, kicked back up in the air, and picked off by Nittany Lion safety Nick Sukay.
Penn State then proceeded to eat 10:17 off the clock with a 20-play, 68-yard drive resulting in a 28-yard field goal by kicker Collin Wagner.
