MADISON, Wis.— Wisconsin’s David Gilreath returned Iowa kicker Daniel Murray’s 63-yard punt for 26 yards before being stopped at the Wisconsin 33 by Murray himself. Badger running back John Clay netted 69 yards at the end of halftime and still looked sharp despite the hard hit by Iowa linebacker Pat Angerer early in the game. Clay rushed for two back-to-back plays to start the second half, putting the ball on the 37-yard line for the Badgers.
When the Wisconsin offense switched away from the run game, it found trouble in Iowa’s secondary. Defensive back Amari Spievey picked off quarterback Scott Tolzien. Spievey’s interception led to Ricky Stanzi finding tight end Tony Moeaki to score the Hawkeyes’ first touchdown. Murray’s extra point tied the game up at 10 -10. Stanzi and Iowa’s offensive line continued to struggle fighting off the Badger defense as Chris Borland sacked Stanzi. Borland’s sack forced a fumble which was recovered by teammate O’Brien Schofield at the Iowa 25.
Stanzi completed a pass to Derrell Johnson-Koulianos for 11 yards to close the half.
