COLUMBUS, Ohio — After Iowa’s defense forced the explosive Ohio State offense to a three-and-out on the game’s first possession, the Hawkeyes’ offense moved the ball effectively before punting.
Buckeye quarterback Terrelle Pryor showed both his athleticism and his erratic nature on his team’s second possession.
A few plays after converting a third-and-six with his legs, Pryor nearly threw an interception to Iowa safety Brett Greenwood. Ohio State punted two plays later, giving Iowa good field position of its own 43-yard line.
For the second consecutive possession, the Hawkeye offense found itself in the Buckeyes’ territory. Iowa quarterback James Vandenberg continued to be effective against Ohio State’s secondary. The redshirt freshman quarterback was 7-of-8 in the opening quarter, with his only incompletion being a Trey Stross drop.
Head coach Kirk Ferentz’s squad drove it down to the Buckeyes’ 9-yard line, before making a 33-yard field goal with 53 second left in the first quarter.
