Top-ranked Iowa wrestling takes down No. 2 Iowa State, 18-16

AMES, Iowa — All but two of 10 matches between No. 1 Iowa and No. 2 Iowa State were won by decision in the Hawkeyes’ 18-16 dual victory.

A pin by Iowa 149-pounder Brent Metcalf, and a major decision by Iowa State’s Jake Varner over Chad Beatty at 197-pounds, were the only matches separated by more than six points.

Hawkeye 125-pounder Matt McDonough, called a sparkplug for the team after the dual by Iowa head coach Tom Brands, started off with a 13-7 victory over Andrew Long.

Iowa 133-pounder Daniel Dennis followed with a 10-8 sudden victory win over Nick Fanthorpe, before Iowa’s Dan LeClere fell to Nick Gallick 8-6, also sudden victory.

157-pound Hawkeye Aaron Janssen took the victory over Andrew Sorenson, 8-6.

Two losses by favored Iowa grapplers sandwhiched Jay Borschel’s 10-4 win at 174-pounds. Iowa senior Ryan Morningstar fell to Jon Reader 4-3 at 165-pounds, while Iowa State’s Jerome Ward defeated Phillip Keddy 5-3.

Iowa finished with two more losses by 197-pounder Chad Beatty, who lost to top-ranked Jake Varner, and another by sophomore heavyweight Blake Rasing, who fell to Cyclone David Zabriskie.

The Hawkeyes have won five straight duals over their in-state rivals.
