Regents approve $100 spring surcharge

The state Board of Regents approved a $100 surcharge for spring semester today with a vote of 6 to 3.

Originally presented at their Oct. 29 meeting, the surcharge will be wrapped into next semester’s tuition.

For students with need-based financial aid, the $100 will be factored into financial aid packages and adjusted accordingly, Board President David Miles said.

The total money garnered from students is predicted to make up 10 percent of the institutions’ $60 million budget gap. The other 90 percent will come from “all other quarters” of the universities, Miles said.

“We appreciate [students'] sacrifice, we recognize it, and hope they understand,” he added.

UI President Sally Mason said she wanted to commend student government leaders for their support of student contribution to the budget cuts, but said the decision was made reluctantly.

“Obviously asking our students to bear a portion of the burden of these budget cuts was not a place that any of us had hoped we would have to go,” Mason said.

Regents Michael Gartner, Ruth Harkin, and Greta Johnson voted against the surcharge.
