MIAMI — At halftime, the No. 10 Iowa Hawkeyes lead the No. 9 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 14-7.
The quarter began with Georgia Tech taking momentum away from Iowa after a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown by sophomore cornerback Jerrard Terrant trimmed Iowa’s lead to 14-7. Iowa’s final series of the first quarter carried over to the second, and would end with a punt by junior Ryan Donahue that landed out of bounds at the Yellow Jacket 7-yard line.
But once again, Georgia Tech failed to move the ball, going three-and-out for the fourth time in the game. The drive was highlighted for Iowa by junior defensive tackle Karl Klug, who sacked quarterback Josh Nesbitt on a 3rd-and-5 play.
Iowa then found itself doing nothing with the ball after a first-down catch by junior Derrell Johnson-Koulianos was overturned. Johnson-Koulianos was injured on the play, but would come back on Iowa’s ensuing series.
After another punt by junior Ryan Donahue, the Yellow Jackets picked up a first down for the first time on the evening when junior A-back Anthony Allen picked up 16 yards. However, the Yellow Jackets wound up punting again.
Both teams would exchange punts again before Iowa got the ball with exactly two minutes left and 81 yards to go for a score. The Hawkeyes reached Yellow Jacket territory before an ineligible receiver penalty was called on senior tight end Tony Moeaki. Stanzi then attempted to throw a deep ball to junior Colin Sandeman on a 3rd-and-5, but it was batted away.
Iowa went for it on 4th-and-5, but Stanzi’s pass to Moeaki was broken up.
