2010 Orange Bowl First Quarter update — No. 10 Iowa 14, No. 9 Georgia Tech 7

MIAMI — At the end of the first quarter of the 2010 FedEx Orange Bowl, the No. 10 Iowa Hawkeyes lead the No. 9 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 14-7.

The game started with Georgia Tech winning the coin toss and electing to defer to the second half. On their opening possession, the Hawkeyes saw quarterback Ricky Stanzi complete two passes to wideout Marvin McNutt before the sophomore fumbled the ball away to the Yellow Jackets.

However, Georgia Tech was not able to capitalize on the Iowa turnover. On a 3rd-and-6, quarterback Josh Nesbitt overthrew a deep ball to wideout Demaryius “Bay-Bay” Thomas, forcing the Yellow Jackets to punt for the first time in three games.

The Hawkeyes made the most of their second opportunity with the ball, marching 80 yards on seven plays before McNutt caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Stanzi on a 3rd-and-Goal fade route. The series was highlighted by a nine-yard 3rd-down reception from junior Derrell Johnson-Koulianos, and then on the ensuing play, a 54-yard reception to the Georgia Tech 9-yard line by senior tight end Tony Moeaki.

The Yellow Jackets were stuffed again on three plays, and spent a timeout trying to draw Iowa offsides on a 4th-and-1.

The Hawkeyes would then go 83 yards down the field, and Stanzi would throw his second touchdown of the evening, a 21-yard completion to junior Colin Sandeman, to give Iowa a 14-0 lead.

However, Georgia Tech would respond when sophomore cornerback Jerrard Terrant returned a Stanzi interception 40 yards for a touchdown with 24 seconds left in the quarter to cut the Hawkeye lead in half, 14-7.
