2010 Orange Bowl Third Quarter update — Iowa increases lead to 17-7

Posted on 05 January 2010

MIAMI — Through three quarters at Land Shark Stadium, the No. 10 Iowa Hawkeyes lead the No. 9 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 17-7, in the 2010 FedEx Orange Bowl.

The Hawkeyes took a 14-7 lead into halftime, and the Yellow Jackets began the second half with the ball. After only mustering six yards on the ground in the first half, junior B-back Jonathan Dwyer was a huge contributor in Georgia Tech driving all the way to the Iowa 24.

However, a false start penalty on 3rd-and-4 proved costly for the Yellow Jackets. After failing to convert on a 3rd-and-9, Georgia Tech tried a 41-yard field goal from kicker Chandler Anderson, only to watch the kick sail to the right.

Iowa then responded with a crucial drive, which featured a key 23-yard reception by senior tight end Tony Moeaki on a 2nd-and-19. The 11-play series concluded when junior kicker Daniel Murray connected on a 33-yard field goal attempt to put the Hawkeyes ahead, 17-7, with 2:17 remaining in the quarter.
