Update: Dancers staying on their feet

David Scrivner/The Daily Iowan Morale captains dance on stage at 5:28 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010 during Dance Marathon 16.

Emily Adair eased herself into a chair slowly, a large black boot heavy on her left leg.  This would be her first break in hours.

The sophomore, who is currently in the throes of her first “Big Event,”  spent winter break in Florida and came home with a stress fracture, a result of hours of walking.

Despite her “special accommodations” pass, which allows her to sit whenever she pleases, Adair has struggled to remain standing.

Inspired by the fight of kids with cancer, she has only sat for a total of 15 minutes since the event started — 10 hours ago.

Although she had raised around half of her money before the stress fracture, Adair still had half to go, which, for her, meant a few nights of canning.

While she said raising money in the cold with a boot on was not the best experience, it did have its perks.

“I think there was definitely some pity money there,” she said.

Now, with all her money raised, and watching those affected by the power of Dance Marathon, she said all the hard work and discomfort has paid off.

Looking back on her canning experience, she said, “It was so cold, and rainy, and my foot hurt — I just wanted to go home so bad.  But then I would think, the kids, they have cancer, they don’t even have a choice.  I could handle another hour in the cold.”
