17-year-old charged with murder

Police have charged a 17-year-old Iowa City man with murder for the Oct. 8, 2009 murder of 64 year-old John E. Versypt, according to a statement released by the Iowa City Police Department.

Charles William Curtis Thompson, 17, is charged with murder in the 1st degree. Thompson will make his initial appearance at the Johnson County Courthouse at 1:20 p.m. today.

According to the statement, police believe Thompson was allegedly trying to rob Versypt at the time of the murder.

Versypt’s body was found at the Broadway Condominiums, 1958 Broadway St., on Oct. 8. He was reportedly making repairs to some of the condos he owned in the building. The Cordova, Ill., native was found in the hallway next to a screwdriver and a “No Smoking” sign.
