Hawkeyes fall to No. 6 Boilermakers, 63-40

Posted on 13 February 2010

The shots didn’t fall for the Iowa men’s basketball team on Saturday in West Lafayette, Ind.

No. 6 Purdue proved to be too much for the Hawkeyes, and the Boilermakers extended their winning streak to seven games with a 63-40 victory. The triumph also marks the seventh consecutive victory for Purdue in its series against Iowa.

Offensively, Iowa posted it’s worst performance all season. The Hawkeyes’ 40 points were a season-low. They also shot 29.8 percent (14-of-47 from the field).

Freshman Cully Payne led Iowa with 11 points and six assists. He also recorded seven of the Hawkeyes’ 15 turnovers.

Iowa hung with Purdue early, but with the Boilermakers up 16-12 at the 11:45 mark of the first half, things got rotten for the Hawkeyes.

A Payne 3-pointer kept Iowa from being shut out in the first half, but Purdue went up 34-15 at halftime thanks to an 18-3 run.

Now with a 9-17 overall record (3-10 in the Big Ten), Iowa returns to the hardwood on Feb. 16 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena against Michigan. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
