McCaffery to be named next Iowa head coach

Posted on 28 March 2010

Gary Barta has found his man.

The Albany Times-Union in Albany, N.Y. reported the Iowa athletics director has agreed to terms with Siena’s Fran McCaffery and will name him as the Hawkeyes’ next head coach on Monday. Sources confirm this report. UI officials wrote in an e-mail that a press conference is scheduled for Monday, with a tentative time set for 11 a.m.

McCaffery comes to Iowa after spending the last five seasons as Siena’s head coach. Under his guidance, the Saints have appeared in three-straight NCAA Tournaments, which include first-round victories over Vanderbilt in 2008 and Ohio State in 2009.

McCaffery also has previous head coaching experience at both Lehigh and North Carolina-Greensboro, as well as 11 years of experience as an assistant coach at Notre Dame under both Digger Phelps and John MacLeod.

The terms of McCaffrey’s deal have not been revealed, according to the Albany Times-Union. Former head coach Todd Lickliter was earning an annual salary of $1.2 million before Barta fired him on March 15.
