UI unveils new football game day initiative

With the Iowa football season less than three weeks away, UI officials are urging tailgaters to “Think Before You Drink.”

The new initiative was unveiled Monday morning at the UI Athletic Hall of Fame by Athletics Director Gary Barta, Interim Vice President for Student Services Tom Rocklin, and Assistant Vice President for UI police Charles Green.

Under the new plan, fans will only be allowed to consume alcoholic beverages in UI parking lots and ramps for one hour after the game and must end all tailgating activities two hours after the game. There are no time stipulations for consumption of alcoholic beverages and tailgating activities prior to game time.

The exception to this new rule is the Oct. 2 night game against Penn State, where no post-game alcohol consumption will be allowed.

In addition, police will also be checking for impaired drivers as they leave Kinnick Stadium by having vehicle safety checkpoints, increased road patrols, and OWI enforcement teams.

“We are really trying to focus on bad behavior,” Green said. “We want this to be an enjoyable event for everyone who comes and enjoys the Hawkeye football games.”
