SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The first 20 minutes or so of Iowa’s practice on Tuesday was open to the media. Here’s some notes from what I saw at Chaparral High School (also known as the Bird Cage, home of the Firebirds).
Canzeri, Bullock split time: Jordan Canzeri was first to line up at running back with the first-team offense. Damon Bullock got a couple looks, too.
Canzeri didn’t carry the ball more than five times in a single game this season (against Louisiana-Monroe), and Bullock saw no more than seven rushes (also against ULM). So don’t expect the running back situation to be a one-man show as the Hawkeyes look for an answer in the wake of Marcus Coker’s suspension. Jason White, De’Andre Johnson, and even Brad Rogers are probably in the running for carries, too.

Scottsdale, Ariz.- Iowa senior cornerback Shaun Prater speaks with the media after practice at Chaparral High School in Scottsdale, AZ on Tuesday, December 27, 2011. The team will face Oklahoma at the Insight Bowl at Sun Devil Stadium on Friday, December 30. (The Daily Iowan/Christy Aumer)
Prater OK: Shaun Prater practiced with his knee wrapped. There’s been a lot of speculation that he went to the hospital earlier this week, but nothing was confirmed.
“I really can’t speak on that,” Prater said Tuesday. “I think that’s a question you’ll have to ask Coach Ferentz.”
But Kirk Ferentz wasn’t available for comment Tuesday. We may hear something Wednesday, as Ferentz and the Iowa starters will be available for interviews as a part of media day. Regardless, Prater said he’d be “ready to go” for Friday’s game.
Herman out? Tight end Brad Herman wasn’t in pads and didn’t practice. He played and caught a pass in Iowa’s regular-season finale at Nebraska. Herman is listed behind C.J. Fiedorowicz as the Hawkeyes’ co-second-team tight end with Zach Derby.
Being Landry: Walk-on quarterback Kyle Anderson was lined up as Oklahoma’s Landry Jones for the scout team offense.
Considine makes an appearance: Security surrounding the practice field was very tight — so tight that when former Hawkeye and current Arizona Cardinals safety Sean Considine approached the gate to observe practice, he was not immediately let in. The former Iowa walk-on was eventually let in after a guard confirmed his name was on “the list.” Phew.
