The Iowa women’s basketball team (10-6, 2-1 Big Ten) returned to its winning ways on Thursday night by defeating Illinois (6-10, 0-3), 69-62, in overtime at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The Hawkeyes — who didn’t hold a lead in the second half — snuck into overtime when senior guard Kamille Wahlin hit the Hawkeyes’ first 3-pointer of the game to tie it at 55-55 with 10 seconds left. The Black and Gold finished 2-of-14 from beyond the arc (Jaime Printy hit the other in overtime).
“We had to go for [the 3-pointer],” head coach Lisa Bluder said. “I will continue to believe in our 3-point shooters, no matter what, because they are the right people to shoot the ball. They’re good 3-point shooters, and it’s just a matter of time. And for us, it just happened at the last [10] seconds of this game.”
The Hawkeyes rolled in overtime; they outscored the Fighting Illini, 14-7, and were 9-for-12 from the free-throw line.
The Hawkeyes will be back on the court on Sunday, when they host No. 19 Nebraska (13-1, 2-0) at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
