Hawkeye freshman Adam Woodbury put an exclamation point on Iowa’s solid first half. The Sioux City native received a pass from point guard Mike Gesell and went up strong to pick up a layup just before the buzzer sounded to give the Hawkeyes a 36-16 halftime lead over Howard.
Iowa guard Devyn Marble has dominated the action through the first 20 minutes of play. The junior has 15 of Iowa’s 36 points on a blistering 6-of-9 shooting effort. His performance carried the offense for much of the first half, until the rest of the team started getting shots to fall.
Marble has been the only Hawkeye with a hot hand, though. The rest of the team has just shot a combined 42 percent from the floor, and Iowa is only 2-for-10 from behind the arc.
The Bisons’ 2-3 zone defense has forced the Black and Gold to be patient in its half-court sets, and Fran McCaffery’s squad responded well. The Hawkeyes have been efficient with the ball so far, turning it over just 4 times. They also have been unselfish, with assists on 10 of their 14 field goals.
