Three Hawks make Field Hockey watch list

The Big Ten conference Field Hockey Players to Watch List was released on Thursday, and three Hawkeyes made the cut.

Iowa seniors Karli Johansen, Marike Stribos, and Niki Schultheis appeared on the list. Johansen made the watch list prior to her junior campaign last year.

The North Vancouver, British Columbia native has played in 49 games  and has started 44 contests. She was selected to the Canadian Women’s National team earlier this year, the Big Ten All-Tournament team in 2011 and 2012, and the Canadian Junior National team in 2012.

Stribos, a Longstreth/NFHCA First Team West Region All-American in 2012, has started 57 out of 58 career games played in black and gold. The Brussels, Belgium native was also a second team All-Big Ten member last season.

Schultheis is beginning her fourth year starting for the Hawkeyes this season. In 2012, she posted a career high 10 assists, ranking second in that category for the Hawks.

The team is on the road today in Muncie, Ind. at Ball State University for their first exhibition game of the season (results to come later today). Head coach Tracey Griesbaum’s squad will play host to Missouri State at Grant Field Sunday at noon for an exhibition match before heading to Easton, Pa. to take on Bucknell on Aug. 30 to open the regular season.
