First to allow women to vote? One of the few states to recognize gay marriage?

As a born and raised Iowan who has CHOSEN to stay in Iowa, if there is anything I've learned in life it's to avoid sweeping generalizations. In my opinion (and I would think any writer worth his/her salt), it's a cop out. Said "writer" has had his 15 minutes. Enough said.

I've lived in Iowa my entire life - grew up in a 'rural' slaughterhouse town and spent four years in 'urban' Iowa City receiving a degree in finance. The article paints a picture of an Iowa I have never seen and makes grandiose claims that are simply untrue. I grew up in Steve King country, was educated in Iowa City, have spent summers working in a slaughterhouse and have family who grow both corn and raise hogs. I've seen The Iowa the author claims to know and it simply doesn't exist.

As an alum of the university the author teaches at I'm a little offended and a little embarrassed. My experiences as an undergrad and in particular in Tippie led me to believe the caliber of professional employed by the UI was much higher than this.

[...] Iowa – Pitt. For three quarters, watching the lovable drunks hot step over the vomit-speckled Kinnick Stadium stairs was the only way to kill the boredom and the disgust. 16 minutes left in this game, 24-3 Pittsburgh. Of course, the Panthers would succumb to a combination of good-ole Hawkeye gumption (four TDs and a heroic turnaround by Vandenberg for a 31-27 win)… [...]
